Dental Cleanings and Exams in Snellville & Stone Mountain

Dental cleanings are dreaded by some patients but for most, teeth cleaning is simple and painless.  Our team of dental hygienists are experienced and trained to make sure your teeth are cleaned properly with comfort and care.

During your cleaning, a physical exam is performed by the dental hygienist.  They will examine the entire mouth using gloved hands, a small mirror, and hygiene tools or equipment.  The hygienist will look for signs of gingivitis or inflamed gums, tooth decay, and other areas of concern.

Removal of Plaque and Tartar

The dental hygienist will use a small mirror and scaler tool to remove plaque and tartar in between the teeth and gums.  While brushing and flossing limit plaque from forming into tartar, once you have tartar, you can only have it removed by the dental hygienist.

Once the plaque and tartar are removed, the hygienist will use a gritty toothpaste to brush each tooth using our in-office electric toothbrush.  The electric toothbrush makes a high-pitched sound is a familiar sound in the dental office but it is not a drill.
To finish, the hygienist will floss each tooth and discuss your flossing technique at home.  Flossing removes any leftover particles and keeps the teeth and gums healthy.

Fluoride Treatment

The final step of the teeth cleaning process is the application for fluoride to the teeth.  Fluoride is used to protect the teeth and fight against cavities, in between cleanings.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Oral cancer screenings are performed by the dentist to look for signs of cancer or precancerous changes in the mouth.  The goal of the oral cancer screening to identify cancer early, when the greatest chance of treatment or cures are possible.

Patients who smoke or drink alcohol excessively have a higher risk to developing oral cancer.  While not smoking or drinking excessively will not eliminate the chance of oral cancer, it will reduce the additional risks.
